Sometimes Daryl Sends Me These Links
Apparently I have a vagina, since I enjoyed Juno, and I'm a loser since I like Scott Pilgrim:

...Juno’s too fucking annoying to be fucked, and you know, Ellen Paige is attractive, and surely a good actress, cause I had never wanted to punch someone in my life so hard.
-- From "Juno-why I’m thankful to have a penis" at The World's Manliest Podcast
Consequently I'm the whitest person Daryl knows according to this blog, Stuff White People Like. On the list, the stuff I like:Stuff I don't like:The blog is funny enough, with glib observations, like:
...white people will apologize without being asked.“Excuse me Dylan, you dropped a piece of paper in front of my desk.”
“Oh, sorry about that!”
It’s just that easy! Just point it out and they’ll apologize.
Unfortunately, I don't think the blog is universal to all white people, even if the title implies that it is - instead it's referring to a very specific socio-economic group of yuppie urban white people who shop for organic vegetables at the ffarmer's market in their gentrified neighborhood before eating breakfast and going to yoga with their Asian wife.

Rural white people (in terms of stereotypes) like owning pick-up trucks to carry around their multiple mixed breed dogs and taking potshots at stop signs.  I'm just saying.

Yeah, my kid cousin sent me the Stuff White People Like link and we laughed at your kind for a while on IM, knowing full well that as part of the model minority, we like many of the same things. But mocking white people is sort of a family tradition - at the very least, it's in our Top Ten Favorite Dinner Topics. I should point out that many of my relatives are uneducated folk and some of my closest friends are white.

(Looks down)

Hmmm. Interesting. I enjoyed Juno, but my vagina seems to point outward and look almost exactly like a penis. Huh.

I have, at various points, discovered that I am very white, very Hispanic, and very Swiss. I think it was the Buena Vista Social Club that put me over the top in the second one. And I'm not Hispanic or Swiss.

That blog is really quite funny, though!

Make no mistake, white people love Buena Vista Social Club!

You left off St. Patrick's Day from that list of stuff you like. Also, Arts Degrees (which you have), Having Gay Friends (YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT), Kitchen Gadgets (shaped like Hello Kitty no less), Indie Music (I saw that shower curtain), Irony (this intersects with "T-Shirts"), Marijuana, 80s Night, Manhattan...and everything other than the four things you listed as not liking.

Though it should be noted that you have indeed on multiple occasions made me feel about not going outside. Therefore, of the 90 or so things listed as Stuff White People Like, only three do not apply to you. This makes you the whitest person I know. And I know Gerald.

PS: Most people, when asked, do not consider someone who has lived in New York City for several years to be "rural." Similarly, you own no pick-up truck, firearms, or dogs.

"Made me feel bad," even! Why, even now, as we speak, I am at home, refusing to go out with coworkers drinking in celebration of my own birthday.

Ah, but do you refuse to go out with your co-workers when they celebrate other co-workers birthdays? If you don't, how much of an enabler are you? Do you bring a present? Or a card?

If yes, when they drop the fact in work the next day do you ignore them? Make an excuse? Say you'll be sure/try/hope to make it next time?

How much fun are you when they go on the inevitable pub crawl? Are you the designated driver?

God damn you are weird.

Like not ironically weird or intentionally weird, actually just weird.

It's not an insult, just an observation.

I don't like St. Patrick's Day the way most people celebrate it - I like a home-cooked meal of corned beef and soda bread, and NOT throwing up green beer at loud bars with tons of other white people who are also about 1/8th Irish.

I don't like 80's Night, because that means having to dress up, and quite possibly dance. I have never been to an '80's Night.

I have lived in NYC for nine years or so, but I spent the other 20 in rural Michigan. I know what "rural" is, but I'm not claiming to be rural.

The blog is about class more than race.

Stuff White People Like is actually not about race but about class. It's about the upper middle class, and middle class people trying to be upper middle class.

Some discussion of this was had at Lupo's livejournal:

According to that website I'm about 2/3 white. I find this pretty funny since it is both nearing my actual genetic whiteness, and my personal assessment of my class striving status.

1. This site is really, really funny.

2. As AK said, it isn't actually about being white. Had it been called Stuff Bohemians Like, said bohemians would respond by being proud of their bohemianism, as that is better than being a Fox-News-watching, Walmart-shopping hillbilly. Calling them white instead makes them slightly confused and ashamed of not being more ethnic.

3. Sorry Erin, but you're slightly 'white'. NY is filled with people far worse than you and N. reduces your 'whiteness' quotient quite a bit since he hates recycling and loves big evil corporations. I imagine many of your non-dork college friends score quite well on this thing.

I know I'm quite white, admittedly, by this blog's checklist and my own personal definition of what that means.

I object to being called the whitest person Daryl knows, since basically all of his friends are white. They all live in suburban Florida, however, so the city lifestyle and class distinctions in the blog don't apply.
